Thermo Scientific Accelerated Solvent Extraction System (Dionex ASE 350)

Description:
An accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) system will be acquired for performing complex and high-efficiency extraction, clean-up and concentration of various organic/inorganic analytes from complex sample matrices such as soil and sludge samples collected from mangrove and other coastal wetland habitats before further analysis.

Lachat Flow Injection Analyzer

Description:
A flow injection analysis (FIA) system capable of automatically analysing a series of environmental chemicals, organic/inorganic pollutants in environmental samples will be purchased for assessing, quantifying, and monitoring the extent of pollution in the water body, soil, and sludge of mangrove and other coastal wetland habitats. These instruments will be used in conjunction with existing HPLC-MS/MS for characterising the physicochemical properties of soil and water in coastal wetlands and for developing bioremediation methods.

Instrument Name:

Thermos Scientific Orbitrap MS (Q Extractive) with Dionex Nano LC (Utimate 3000)

Description:
A high-resolution mass spectrometer coupled with liquid chromatography system (Orbitrap LC-MS/ LC-QTOF-MS) capable of collecting high quality and tandem mass spectra will be acquired for identifying, quantifying, and characterising metabolites and proteomes in bacteria and microalgae. This will allow different comparative metabolomics and proteomic studies for a detailed analysis of the production of secondary metabolites which may alter cellular functions. The instrument will also be used to quantify the compositions of chemical residues, organic pollutants, and microplastics in environmental samples collected from coastal wetland habitats. It will be used in tandem with
our existing ICP-MS, UPLC, LC-MS, GC-MS, GC-FID/ECD, AAS, NMR spectrometer, UV/VIS spectrometer and FTIR.

Flow Cytometer (Bio-Rad Z5 Cell Analyzer) Including Small Particle Detector Upgrade Kit

Description:
A flow cytometer (FACS) with cell sorting function together with the required data analysis software (e.g. FlowJo) will be acquired to perform single-cell analysis of microalgae and bacteria collected from coastal wetlands. The instrument will be used to study the cell physiology of microalgae and bacteria and the cellular mechanisms of microalgae associated with mangroves/coastal wetlands in
various environmental conditions. The cell sorter function will be used in tandem with the Orbitrap LC-MS or LC-QTOF-MS in order to conduct single-cell metabolomic analysis./td>
